SUMMARY:Presidents of the United States Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of our republic\, U.S. Presidents have been popular subjects of commemoratives\, souvenirs\, and tchotchkes. This exhibit in our front window uses bottles\, glass plates\, historic flasks\, and commemoratives from the 1960s and 1970s to trace presidents from George Washington to James E. Carter (a one-time member of our organization). This exhibit was created to celebrate President’s Day\, honor the passing of President Carter\, and to observe the inauguration of the new President.A temporary exhibit\, Presidents of the United States will run through the end of March.

SUMMARY:Lost Regional Sodas Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Whether called soda\, pop\, tonic\, or even coke\, for most of the 18th and 19th centuries\, towns\, cities and regions had their own popular local soft drinks. Most were created by and sold through small bottling houses based on local flavors and regional character. \n\n\n\n\nDuring the 1950s-1970s\, most of these bottlers were purchased by larger companies like Pepsi and either closed or shifted to make that company’s beverages. When the regional drinks did not find popularity with a larger audience\, they were discontinued. \n\n\n\nWhile some regional sodas like Moxie\, Cheerwine\, and Ale 8-one are still available\, most were gone before the end of the 1980s. We celebrate many of these lost sodas in this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Spatter Glass
DESCRIPTION:Spatter glass is a variegated handblown or mold-blown art glass\, also known as end-of-day\, mottled overlay glass\, and splashed glass. The spatter glass technique has been used for millennia\, dating back to the Romans. Spatter glass is produced by rolling hot blown glass over small pieces or chips of colored glass. Lesser quality and reproduction pieces can be identified as the “spatter” is painted on the exterior.

SUMMARY:Bottles & Baseball: The Glass History of America's Pastime
DESCRIPTION:From its beginnings in the 1840s\, Major League Baseball\, America’s Pastime\, his been intertwined with glass bottles. Whether its bottles of beer or soda poured at the ballpark\, to whiskey bottles and decanters telling stories of the game\, to bottles for everyday products that connect to the popularity and heritage of the game. This exhibition focuses on this relationship\, bottles created for the game; and how baseball\, bottles\, and advertising connect with the public in meaningful ways.

SUMMARY:Making Beach Glass Jewelry with Marla Cohen
DESCRIPTION:DATE CHANGE: Making Beach Glass Jewelry with Marla Cohen will now take place on Saturday November 8th at 12 PM. \nWhether you call it Beach Glass or Sea Glass\, everyone loves it! Beautiful pieces of man-made glass lost in the ocean and have been tumbled and shaped by waves\, weathered by the sun\, and worn by salt and other elements in sea water that wash up on the shore for the taking. \nJoin us for this special program where you will learn how to work with beach glass and walk out with a new piece of jewelry! Marla Cohen is a professional artist whose beach glass work is currently on exhibition at the Chafee Art Center in Rutland\, Vermont. Since it’s dinner time\, please bring a potluck dish – homemade or purchased – to share with the group. \nTo register for the workshop: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/MEL5CTEEB3ATU \nAbout Marla \nMarla Cohen currently lives in Rutland\, Vermont. She works in in-home healthcare and makes jewelry on the side. Marla is a distance runner who turned to walking after an injury. In 2016\, she moved to Palm Beach\, Florida to be with her mother in her final days. Long walks on dirt roads became long walks on beaches. \nAlways observant\, she noticed her first piece of sea glass after a hurricane. From there\, the hunt was on. Marla spent nearly 4 years walking private beaches on Palm Beach Island collecting sea glass. She learned to read tide charts and shorelines to discover where and when glass collects on the shore. \nMarla worked as a floral designer in Palm Beach Gardens\, FL. Her employer asked her if she would teach jewelry classes to adults and children. She learned the basics of component jewelry making and went on to teach for the remainder of her time in Florida. \nUnfortunately\, she was diagnosed with Mononucleosis. With no energy to do anything she hunkered down and learned more advanced wiring and design techniques. While threading beads it occurred to her that she could use sea glass if it had a hole in it. And from there she was off. Marla took advanced courses in pearl knotting and Dremel technique. Marla tied art and technique together… wiring technique and found objects. And she has never looked back.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: "A Little off the Top": The History and Artistry of Barber Bottles
DESCRIPTION:Barber Bottles are among the most beautiful types of bottles. Designed and blown for barbers to use in their practice\, they were filled with colognes\, perfumes and other fragrances; hair tonics; shampoos; anti-dandruff tonics and other remedies. Barbers typically filled their own bottles\, using the shapes\, colors and sizes to differentiate which bottles held which products. The heyday of barber bottle manufacture was from the 1870s up until almost the 1920s\, by which point new laws and new commercially available products led to the bottles falling out of favor. Still\, they were manufactured for decorative purposes well into the 21st century. \nThis exhibit highlights bottles from the 1860s through the 1940s\, and includes artifacts of glass\, porcelain and silver. As “working bottles\,” many show patterns of wear\, although the artistry of each shines through.
